BUTOLPOST – United States President Donald Trump claims that G7 member countries are ready to send troops to help secure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping lane that is the lifeblood of world oil distribution.

Trump made this statement to journalists on Wednesday (17/6) when responding to developments in the security situation in the Gulf region.

“They all want to do it. Everyone wants to get involved now, not while the war is going on,” Trump said.

According to Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has expressed Britain’s readiness to participate in security operations in the Strait of Hormuz. Apart from that, Japan is also said to have offered support in efforts to maintain the stability of international shipping routes.

Trump’s statement comes amid diplomatic developments between the United States and Iran. The two countries have reportedly completed the preparation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19.

Based on the contents of the MoU, Washington and Tehran have 60 days to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of a number of United States sanctions against the country.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most vital shipping lanes in the world because it is the main route for oil exports from the Middle East region. Disruptions to security in the region have the potential to trigger a spike in global energy prices and disrupt international supply chains.

Until now there are no further details regarding the form of operation that will be carried out or the number of troops that will likely be deployed by the G7 countries.***
