DEPOK RUBLIC – A desert region in the United States holds one of the world’s most unique geological phenomena: beds of fossil wood more than 200 million years old scattered across Arizona’s barren landscape. This location is known as the area with the largest concentration of petrified wood in the world.
The place, which is now part of the Petrified Forest National Park, has not only attracted the attention of scientists, but also given rise to local legends about a “curse” for anyone who brings home pieces of fossilized wood from the area.
Scientifically, petrified wood is formed when ancient tree trunks are quickly buried by sediment or volcanic ash, then minerals such as silica slowly replace the organic tissue over millions of years. This process ensures that the original structure of the wood is maintained even though it has turned into stone.
Researchers use this area as an important source for studying past ecosystems, especially from the Triassic period. With its excellent level of preservation, the location has been called a “window in time” for understanding ancient life on Earth.
Apart from its scientific value, the story of the curse that developed in society continues to be part of the mystical attraction of the area to this day.
