This day is celebrated every year on May 8, the birth date of Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
The idea for this day emerged after World War I. In 1922, the Czechoslovak Red Cross proposed an annual “Red Cross Truce” to promote peace.
This initiative was discussed at the 14th International Conference of the Red Cross in 1930 and approved at the 15th International Conference in Tokyo in 1934.

However, World War II delayed its implementation. After the war, in 1946, the League of Red Cross Societies revisited the proposal.

In 1984, the day became World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, reflecting the movement’s global reach.
