Hantavirus is in Indonesia, Ministry of Health Records 23 Positive Cases

THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reports that Hantavirus cases have existed in Indonesia for a long time. There have been 23 Hantavirus cases and three deaths recorded in the last three years.

“Yes, it has actually been around for a long time (the Hantavirus case),” said Head of the Communications and Public Services Bureau, Aji Muhawarman, when contacted by Mind-Rakyat.com, Friday, May 8 2026.

Aji explained that Hantavirus cases were found in 9 provinces, namely Yogyakarta, West Java, Jakarta, North Sulawesi, NTT, West Sumatra, Banten, East Java and West Kalimantan.

“This is the national situation. There are 23 positive cases, three deaths, the rest recovered. The remaining two suspected cases have been confirmed negative,” he said.

Ministry of Health’s Appeal to Prevent Hantavirus Transmission

Appeals for the public to avoid Hantavirus, including:

  1. Wash your hands using soap.

  2. Avoid direct contact with the reservoir (rats/shrews), including their droppings.

  3. Get used to house cleaning methods wet cleaning.

  4. Store food and drinks safely using a food hood or closed container.

  5. Close all holes inside and outside the house to prevent mice/shrews from entering.

  6. Avoid contact with sources of infection, including when traveling.

  7. Immediately check yourself at a health facility if you experience symptoms of Hanta virus disease.

  8. Comply with health advisories in your destination country when traveling.
