Fans of the fantasy-action film franchise Avatar are eagerly awaiting the latest updates on the fourth installment of James Cameron’s blockbuster series.
Previously, the third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which premiered in December 2025, attracted more than 3 million moviegoers in Indonesian cinemas. The film also became the highest-grossing Hollywood release, earning US$1 billion worldwide in just 16 days of theatrical release.
News about Avatar 4 is more than just speculation. Sam Worthington, who portrays Jake Sully, has openly revealed that the next sequel is currently in development. According to him, Avatar 4 will introduce major changes to both the storyline and the world of Pandora that audiences have come to know.
During an interview on CBS Mornings, Worthington expressed his excitement about returning for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 alongside Zoe Saldaña, who plays Neytiri.
“I’ve read the scripts for the fourth and fifth films. Of all five movies, the fourth is my favorite. It will completely change the entire storyline and the situation in the world of Pandora,” Sam Worthington said.
Eight-Year Time Jump
Worthington’s remarks are consistent with comments made by Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who plays Tuk. She revealed that Avatar 4 will feature a time jump of approximately eight years after the events of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
James Cameron has also stated that the film will be set around the year 2175.
At the end of Avatar 3, Spider is shown breathing on Pandora without respiratory equipment and is officially accepted by the Na’vi people.
With that development, the fourth installment is expected to place greater focus on the younger generation of Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family—Lo’ak, Kiri, Tuk, and Spider.
In addition, Kiri is reportedly set to become the narrator of Avatar 4, replacing Lo’ak, who served as the narrator in the third film.
New Storyline and Release Schedule
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are also expected to depict an Earth that has become increasingly critical due to humanity’s actions. In the story, approximately 20 billion people remain stranded on Earth and require evacuation to Pandora.
The deteriorating condition of Earth was first introduced in the original Avatar, where the planet was portrayed as being almost devoid of living trees and shrouded in darkness and environmental devastation.
Meanwhile, Miles Quaritch is expected to continue appearing throughout every upcoming Avatar sequel, suggesting that his character will remain a central part of the franchise’s evolving storyline.
Avatar 4 is currently in the pre-production stage and is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 21, 2029.***
