BUTOLPOST – Tensions between China and the Philippines are heating up again. The Chinese government officially imposed sanctions on Philippine Defense Minister Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and his family after assessing that the official had repeatedly made statements that were detrimental to Beijing’s interests.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday (11/6), stated that Teodoro had made a number of statements that were considered irresponsible towards China and contributed to the deterioration of bilateral relations between the two countries.
As part of these sanctions, Teodoro, his wife and children are prohibited from entering mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau. Apart from that, all organizations and individuals in China are also prohibited from carrying out any transactions, cooperation or activities with them.
Beijing’s firm move comes just days after Teodoro delivered strong criticism of China at the Shangri-La Dialogue international security forum in Singapore.
In the forum, Teodoro accused China of expanding its territory in the South China Sea and carrying out actions that were considered to pressure other countries in the region. This statement sparked a heated debate with the Chinese military delegation who attended the meeting.
Two senior officers from the Chinese People’s Liberation Army even questioned the Philippines’ position, which was considered to be increasingly close to the United States. They highlight whether Manila will act as an extension of Washington in Asia or choose to build a more constructive relationship with Beijing.
Teodoro rejected these accusations and emphasized that the Philippines’ security cooperation with the United States was part of his country’s national interests. The Philippines itself is known as one of the oldest US allies in the Asia-Pacific region.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning previously also criticized Teodoro’s statement. According to him, the comments made by the Philippine Minister of Defense have damaged trust and good relations between the two countries.
Until the sanctions announcement was issued, there had been no official response from Teodoro or the Philippine government.
Relations between Beijing and Manila have continued to deteriorate in recent years. Disputes centered on the South China Sea often trigger new tensions, especially regarding overlapping territorial claims in a number of coral reefs and strategic water areas.
The two countries accuse each other of carrying out provocative actions in the disputed region, making the South China Sea one of the most sensitive geopolitical hotspots in the Asian region today.***
