Amnesty International was first founded in 1961 in London, England by Peter Benenson, a British labor lawyer.
He was inspired to found this organization after learning that two Portuguese students were imprisoned for seven years after “toasting to freedom.”
Together with Eric Baker of the Religious Society of Friends, and many other intellectuals, they wrote an article entitled “The Forgotten Prisoners” which was published in The Observer on 28 May 1961.
This led to a call that quickly developed into an organization that would work to change the world and ensure, that everyone is entitled to a set of basic human rights.

The organization’s tireless efforts since then have been crucial in exposing human rights violations and working to change government policies regarding the protection of human rights.
Their work has not always been popular, with members accused of everything from espionage (Russia in the 1980s) to protecting criminal elements (the Moroccan government).
In fact, they are defenders of the oppressed and the persecuted, and work every day to alleviate the suffering of people everywhere facing hunger, the trials of war, and those seeking asylum.***
