THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – Tensions in the Gulf region have risen again after an attack attributed to Iran hit the passenger terminal of Kuwait International Airport. The incident killed at least one person and injured 63 others, becoming the deadliest attack in the region since the ceasefire came into force on April 8, 2026.

Based on a report by The Guardian on Wednesday, June 3 2026, the attack occurred amidst increasing tensions between Iran and the United States regarding the maritime blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Starting from the Tanker Incident in the Strait of Hormuz

The United States Central Command (Centcom) said that on Tuesday it launched a Hellfire missile from a military aircraft to disable the engine of the Botswana-flagged tanker, M/T Lexie.

According to Centcom, the ship is suspected of trying to penetrate the US blockade towards Kharg Island, Iran. The US military claims the ship’s crew ignored a number of warnings given in the 24 hours before the action was carried out.

Shortly after the incident, Iran was said to have launched a drone attack that hit the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport.

Kuwait Condemns Attacks and Expels Iranian Diplomats

Kuwaiti Defense Ministry spokesman, Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan, strongly condemned the attack.

He called the attack an “Iranian criminal aggression” that caused considerable material damage and resulted in casualties and injuries.

In response, Kuwait’s civil aviation authorities temporarily suspended air traffic operations and diverted a number of flights to alternative airports.

The Kuwaiti government also took diplomatic steps by summoning Iran’s charge d’affaires and designating two Iranian diplomats as persona non grata. The two diplomats were given 24 hours to leave Kuwaiti territory.

Iran Blames Kuwait and Bahrain

On the other hand, Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Kuwait and Bahrain of being responsible for the escalation of the conflict.

In its statement, Iran said the two countries had permitted the use of their territory and infrastructure by the United States to support operations it considered aggressive against Tehran.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have attacked the US Fifth Fleet base in Bahrain using missiles and drones in retaliation for the United States’ attack on Qeshm Island.

However, this claim was immediately denied by Centcom, which stated that there were no successful attacks on US military facilities in Bahrain.

Trump Claims Peace Deal Is Closer

In the midst of an increasingly tense situation, United States President Donald Trump stated that diplomacy with Iran was still ongoing.

In an interview released on Wednesday, Trump said Iran was close enough to agreeing to a peace deal with Washington.

“Maybe it could happen this weekend,” Trump said.

He also emphasized that his government does not want a further escalation of the conflict and has no need to deploy ground troops to the region.

Trump even expressed his desire to meet directly with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, as part of efforts to find a diplomatic solution.

Iran Threatens to Suspend Peace Talks

However, signals coming from Tehran point in a different direction.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the ceasefire with the United States covers all fronts of the conflict, including the situation in Lebanon.

According to Araghchi, violations occurring in one area should be considered a violation of the entire agreement.

Iran also hinted at the possibility of suspending peace talks as a form of protest against Israel’s ongoing military operations in Lebanon even though a ceasefire has been implemented.

Lebanese authorities report said at least 30 Israeli attacks took place in the southern region of the country on Tuesday. One of the attacks reportedly killed six family members, including two children and a woman.

US Says War Is Over

In another development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared the war with Iran essentially over.

In his testimony to Congress, Rubio claimed Tehran is now willing to open discussions on certain aspects of its nuclear program, something Iran previously rejected several weeks ago.

However, Rubio cautioned that these developments do not guarantee a final agreement acceptable to both parties.

Meanwhile, the M/T Lexie is the sixth ship reported to have been disabled by the US military since the blockade against Iran began on April 13 2026. Washington also claims to have diverted at least 122 ships trying to enter or leave Iranian ports during that period.

This latest escalation shows that the security situation in the Gulf region remains very fragile, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain the ceasefire and prevent a wider conflict.***
