Ivory Coast vs Norway Set for High-Stakes Showdown as Both Teams Chase Historic World Cup Milestone

Viking Row

Ivory Coast and Norway are set to battle for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 in what promises to be one of the most compelling Round of 32 matches. The encounter, featuring two teams driven by the ambition to make history, will take place at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, United States, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Both sides advanced to the Round of 32 as runners-up in their respective groups. Ivory Coast secured second place in Group E behind Germany after defeating Ecuador 1-0 and Curaçao 2-0. Norway, meanwhile, finished as Group I runners-up following victories over Iraq (4-1) and Senegal (3-2).

Although Norway suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to France in their final group-stage match, they are expected to be much fresher for the clash against Ivory Coast. That is because head coach Ståle Solbakken rested ten of his regular starters, including star striker Erling Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard, two of the team’s most influential players.

Solbakken’s decision drew criticism after Norway’s heavy loss, but the coach insisted that the extensive rotation was necessary to preserve his squad’s fitness for the far more important knockout stage. He explained that risking his key players against France could have left them fatigued or vulnerable ahead of the Round of 32.

“For me, the decision was very clear. The physiotherapists, the health staff, the medical team, and even some of the players themselves all agreed that it would have been extremely difficult for many of them to play,” Solbakken said.

The 58-year-old coach admitted that the decision disappointed many supporters but maintained that the team’s long-term objectives had to take priority over fans’ desire to see the star players in action.

“The only consideration was the supporters. Of course, they wanted to see Erling and Martin Ødegaard play, but it didn’t take us long to make this decision,” he said.

According to Solbakken, both Haaland and Ødegaard always put the team’s interests first.

“The supporters naturally want to see them on the pitch, but hopefully we can give them many more memorable nights in the weeks ahead,” he added.

Solbakken also urged fans to look beyond a single match and focus on Norway’s journey in the tournament.

“We’ve already given our supporters several victories and the opportunity to enjoy more matches. That’s why we’re here. We’re not a nation that came just to take part—we want to stay in this tournament for as long as possible. That made this decision an easy one,” he said.

Ivory Coast Determined to Build on Historic Achievement

Solbakken’s strategy of preserving his key players will only be judged successful if Norway can overcome Ivory Coast. Their opponents arrive equally motivated after making history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

However, Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé has warned his players not to become distracted by the historic achievement. He believes their real challenge has only just begun.

“Ivory Coast fully deserves this moment, and we’ll celebrate it tonight. But after that, we must recover well because we’re aiming for something even bigger,” Faé said.

He also called on Ivory Coast supporters to continue backing the team.

“We ask all our supporters to stay with us and continue giving us their full support so this squad can go as far as possible,” he said.

One of the key figures behind Ivory Coast’s success has been Nicolas Pépé. The experienced winger delivered an outstanding performance in the crucial victory over Curaçao, scoring twice and demonstrating his clinical finishing and top-level experience. His form highlights the attacking threat Ivory Coast can pose to Norway.

In midfield, Ibrahim Sangaré has been equally important, providing balance and control while anchoring the team’s transitions. Quick counterattacks and aggressive pressing have become the African side’s primary weapons.

On paper, Norway hold a slight advantage in terms of individual quality and attacking firepower, especially with their rested first-choice players returning to the lineup. However, Ivory Coast enter the match with tremendous confidence and momentum after their historic breakthrough. Their experienced squad also possesses the composure to make life difficult for the Scandinavian side.

The match is expected to be played at a high tempo, with very little separating the two teams. A single mistake could prove decisive in this winner-takes-all encounter.

The winner will advance to face the victor of the Brazil vs Japan Round of 32 match.***
