LEBAK PORTAL – The first tsunami wave with a height of 40 centimeters has reached the coast of Iwate Prefecture, Japan, according to a report from NHK on Monday.
Earlier on the same day, the Japan Meteorological Agency informed that an earthquake measuring 7.4 had occurred north of Honshu Island in the Pacific Ocean, specifically in the Aomori and Iwate Prefectures.
NHK further reported that the tsunami was detected in the ocean and was moving towards Iwate and Aomori Prefectures.
Tsunami waves were also recorded in waters about 50 kilometers from Miyagi Prefecture, as NHK further reported.

Evacuations have been announced for at least 20,000 people in Iwate Prefecture, including 9,640 people in Otsuchi City and about 11,000 people in Kamaishi City.
Currently, the highest measured tsunami height reached 80 centimeters in Iwate Prefecture.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia guarantees that no Indonesian citizens (WNI) were victims of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that hit northern Japan in the afternoon local time.
The Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, stated that through the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, they had received information regarding tsunami warnings in Aomori Prefecture, Iwate and parts of Hokkaido after the earthquake.

“Currently, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens being affected by the earthquake,” said Heni in a written statement confirmed on Monday 20 April 2026.
He emphasized that the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo continues to maintain close communication with the Indonesian diaspora community in the earthquake-affected areas, especially in Aomori and Iwate Prefectures.
For safety, Indonesian citizens in Aomori, Iwate and Hokkaido Prefectures are reminded to always pay attention to tsunami warnings and follow evacuation instructions from local authorities.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked Japan on Monday local time, with a tsunami warning issued for northern and northeastern Japan.
The earthquake was recorded at 07:52 GMT (14:52 WIB), with the epicenter located 71 kilometers from Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture, according to data from USGS.
Meanwhile, the Japanese government recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5, and a tsunami warning was issued for the Aomori, Hokkaido and Iwate areas on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
According to a report from Kyodo News, local authorities briefly suspended high-speed train operations between the capital Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture following a large earthquake.

The Japanese government also confirmed that “no abnormal conditions were detected at the nuclear power plants” in Aomori and Miyagi.***
