THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – The United States launched a new attack into Iranian territory on Thursday, May 28, 2026, targeting a military facility in Bandar Abbas after Iranian forces fired an attack drone towards the Strait of Hormuz. This attack came amid an increasingly heated deadlock in peace negotiations, while Israel simultaneously expanded its operations in southern Lebanon.
Reporting from The Guardian, the US Central Military Command (CENTCOM) shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones which were declared to be endangering the Strait of Hormuz area, based on information from US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. The ground control station in Bandar Abbas which was about to launch the fifth drone was then attacked and destroyed. A US official said the action was measured, purely defensive and intended to maintain the ceasefire.

This operation took place at the same time as a report from the Iranian broadcaster, IRIB, which stated that Iranian troops opened fire on four ships trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in the early hours of Thursday at 00.35 local time without coordinating with Iranian security forces.
The diplomatic situation became increasingly tense after US President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued another strong threat. In a televised White House cabinet meeting, Trump said Iran was “negotiating with exhaustion” and warned it would “finish the job” if Tehran did not agree to a deal soon. Trump also claimed Iran was trying to wait until the November midterm elections before agreeing to an agreement.
More surprising, Trump at the same meeting also made remarks that appeared to be a threat to Oman, a US ally, when asked about the possibility of a temporary arrangement in which Iran and Oman jointly manage traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the strait should be open to everyone and “Oman will behave like everyone else or we will have to destroy them.” The White House did not immediately clarify whether Trump misspoke.

Earlier, Iranian state television claimed to have obtained an informal draft of a deal that would restore commercial shipping through the strait to pre-war levels within a month, with Iran and Oman jointly managing traffic. The White House called the report a “complete fabrication.”
Conflict Escalation in Lebanon
In Lebanon, conditions have also worsened. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said his military was “deepening its operations” in Lebanon. Since the beginning of the week, the Israeli military is claimed to have attacked 550 targets, a significant increase from before. Israel also declared a large area in southern Lebanon a new combat zone and issued an evacuation order for the residents of Tire (Tyre) early Thursday.
Reporting from The Guardian, more than 1.2 million Lebanese citizens have been displaced due to Israeli attacks and evacuation orders since March 2 2026. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that more than 3,200 people died as a result of Israeli attacks. The World Health Organization says at least 608 people have been killed in Lebanon in Israeli attacks since a ceasefire was announced on April 16, a ceasefire that now appears closer to collapse.
Hezbollah said it would continue fighting until the war in Lebanon ends and Israel withdraws its troops from the south of the country. Iran itself insists that Lebanon must be covered by any ceasefire deal negotiated with the US, while Israel wants to deal with Lebanon through a separate channel.
