Celebrations marking Spain’s victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Madrid resulted in the arrest of seven people. Despite the arrests, the festivities were generally peaceful and proceeded without any major incidents.
The arrests were made in connection with several incidents that occurred during the nationwide celebrations, according to a report by the newspaper La Razon on Monday (July 20).
Spain secured the 2026 FIFA World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final held on Sunday (July 19) at New York-New Jersey in the United States.
The winning goal for La Furia Roja was scored by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time.
The victory earned Spain its second FIFA World Cup title.
The achievement was celebrated on a massive scale in Madrid on Monday, with nearly two million fans filling the streets of the Spanish capital to welcome the returning champions.
The Spanish national team took part in an open-top bus parade through the city center before making its way to Plaza de Cibeles.
The squad arrived in Madrid at approximately 1:00 p.m. local time.
The celebrations began with an official reception hosted by King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, both of whom had attended the World Cup final at the stadium in the New York-New Jersey area.
During the reception, King Felipe VI praised the unity and determination displayed by the Spanish team in overcoming Argentina in the final.
Following the reception, the players boarded an open-top bus from the Moncloa Palace, the official residence of Spain’s prime minister.
The parade traveled through the heart of Madrid, with an estimated 1.8 million supporters lining the route.
The celebrations concluded at Plaza de Cibeles, where the team bus arrived at around 10:00 p.m. local time.
Approximately 120,000 fans had waited there for hours and were entertained by performances from several Spanish pop singers before the team’s arrival.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was held from June 11 to July 19.
The tournament was the first edition to feature 48 teams and was jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.***
