Clean Water Crisis Expands in Garut, PDAM Distributes Aid to Affected Areas

Clean water shortages

The dry season affecting several areas in Garut Regency has begun to cause significant impacts, including drought and a clean water crisis in a number of communities. In response to the situation, the regional water utility company, PDAM Tirta Intan Garut, has started distributing clean water assistance to affected areas.

PDAM Tirta Intan Garut Corporate Secretary Hendra Gunarah stated that the company had received instructions from the Regent of Garut to prepare clean water aid for residents experiencing difficulties in accessing water supplies during the 2026 dry season.

According to Hendra, the clean water assistance program is actually carried out every year as part of the company’s social service commitment to communities affected by drought. This year, the program is once again being implemented with support from the local government.

“In fact, every year we always provide clean water assistance to areas in need. Even in 2026, we have been instructed by the Regent to prepare the program, and we have already delivered water assistance to several areas,” he said on Friday, June 19, 2026.

He explained that, so far, PDAM Tirta Intan has distributed clean water assistance to two sub-districts in southern Garut that have begun experiencing water shortages, namely Pameungpeuk and Cibalong.

Hendra added that the company is still unable to estimate the total volume of clean water that will be distributed throughout this year’s dry season. This is because the assistance is delivered gradually based on requests and needs submitted by village administrations, sub-district authorities, and the regency government.

Before assistance is dispatched, PDAM coordinates with the requesting parties to verify the locations and determine the required water volume, ensuring that distribution reaches the intended beneficiaries.

Based on previous years’ experience, approximately five sub-districts typically receive clean water assistance during the dry season.

Meanwhile, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut Regency has mapped several areas considered vulnerable to clean water shortages during the dry season.

The regions most frequently affected include Cigedug, Malangbong, and Selaawi sub-districts.

In addition, Karangpawitan, Wanaraja, Samarang, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul, Cibatu, Sukawening, Sukaresmi, Cibiuk, and several southern Garut sub-districts such as Pameungpeuk, Cikelet, Caringin, and Bungbulang have also been categorized as drought-prone areas.***
