BUTOLPOST β€” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire in the Gulf region and the Middle East amid rising regional tensions.

Wang made this call when he met Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Tuesday (26/5).

During the meeting, Wang emphasized that China wants the Gulf region to immediately return to peace and stability. According to him, the current war from the start should not have happened and should not be allowed to continue for a long time.

β€œThe top priority is to push for a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire,” Wang Yi said.

China’s top diplomat also asked the international community to increase peace efforts and reject all actions that could worsen the situation or trigger a new escalation of conflict in the Middle East region.

Wang was at UN headquarters to chair a high-level UN Security Council meeting to discuss strengthening the international system and upholding the goals and principles of the UN Charter.

China, continued Wang, supports various mediation steps taken by Pakistan and a number of other countries to end the conflict. Beijing is also ready to coordinate with Bahrain and other members of the UN Security Council to push for a political settlement and create long-term peace in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani appreciated China’s active steps in promoting peace in the Gulf region and the Middle East.

He hopes that China can play a bigger role in creating stability and stopping the conflict that continues to escalate in the region.***
