BUTOLPOST – Iran confirmed that a 14-point peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States has been officially finalized after being signed by the presidents of both countries. The agreement is a new step in efforts to ease the tensions that have haunted relations between Tehran and Washington.
Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, on Thursday (18/6), stated that the document named the “Islamabad Memorandum” had been officially adopted after being signed by the two heads of state.
According to a report by the Mehr news agency, the signing was carried out digitally as part of a mechanism agreed upon by both parties.
Baghaei explained that discussions in the MoU would only focus on two main issues, namely Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions that the United States has imposed on Tehran.
He said the negotiation process would last 60 days. However, this time period can be extended if both parties consider that further discussions are still needed considering the complexity of the issues being negotiated.
In addition, Baghaei revealed that the United States’ commitment to lifting the naval blockade against Iran came into effect after emergency negotiations triggered by Israel’s attack on the area south of Beirut, Lebanon, as well as the increasing threat of retaliation from Iran.
According to him, the implementation of this commitment can be seen from the activities of Iranian ships which can now enter and exit ports without hindrance.
“This is an indication that the United States’ commitment is starting to be implemented,” said Baghaei.
On the other hand, Iran also stated that its commitment regarding shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz will come into effect after the MoU is officially implemented.
This agreement is seen as one of the most important diplomatic steps in recent years which has the potential to pave the way for easing tensions between Iran and the United States, especially regarding nuclear issues, economic sanctions and stability in the Middle East region.***
