THE MIND OF THE PEOPLE – The United States is reportedly committed to lifting all sanctions on Iran as part of a draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) which is the basis for a final agreement regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

This report was conveyed by the Iranian news agency IRNA on Wednesday, June 17 2026, based on the MoU document which was said to have been agreed upon by the two countries. In the document, Washington is said to be willing to end various forms of sanctions that have restricted Iran’s economic and trade activities for years.

In the seventh paragraph of the MoU, it is stated that the United States will lift sanctions imposed through various international and national mechanisms.

“The United States is committed to ending all types of sanctions against Iran, including sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and all unilateral US sanctions, both primary and secondary, within the time period agreed by the parties, which will be part of the final agreement,” said the document quoted by IRNA.

It is said that the lifting of sanctions will be carried out according to a mutually agreed schedule and will be included in the final agreement which will still be negotiated further.

Final Agreement Targeted to be Completed in 60 Days

Previously, Iran stated that the memorandum of understanding was the initial basis for drawing up a final agreement that would resolve disputes related to the country’s nuclear program.

Under the terms of the MoU, Iran and the United States are targeting follow-up negotiations to produce a final agreement within 60 days after signing the initial document.

However, the document published by IRNA also provides room for both parties to extend the deadline if the negotiation process requires additional discussions.

This provision is stated in the third paragraph of the MoU which regulates the flexibility of the negotiation schedule in order to reach an agreement that is acceptable to both countries.

Iran Says It Will Not Develop Nuclear Weapons

As part of the commitments contained in the MoU, Iran reiterated that its nuclear program is not aimed at developing weapons.

In the eighth paragraph of the document, Tehran conveys a guarantee that the country will not produce or acquire nuclear weapons.

“Iran reiterated that it will not produce or acquire nuclear weapons.”

Apart from that, the two countries are also said to have agreed to resolve various issues related to Iran’s nuclear material through an international monitoring mechanism involving the International Atomic Energy Agency.

It is hoped that this monitoring will be the basis for building trust between the two parties while ensuring that Iran’s nuclear activities remain within the corridor of peaceful use.

If a final agreement is reached, the move has the potential to be one of the biggest diplomatic breakthroughs in relations between Iran and the United States after years of tension, economic sanctions and disputes over Tehran’s nuclear program.***
