KABARMEGAPOLITAN.com – A short-haul flight from Oakland to San Diego was suddenly delayed for 62 minutes.
The cause is not only air traffic jams, but also the presence of an unusual “passenger”: a humanoid robot named Bebop.
Bebop is a robot based on the G1 model from Unitree Robotics. This robot was brought by an American robotics company to appear at an event in San Diego.
Initially, Bebop was planned to be shipped via pressurized cargo baggage. However, there is a problem:
- The containers in particular are too heavy
- Exceeding Southwest Airlines baggage limits
In the end, the solution taken was quite unique—Bebop bought his own ticket and sat in the cabin like an ordinary passenger.

With a height of around 1.2 meters and a weight of almost 32 kg, Bebop’s presence immediately sparked a number of concerns.
Initially the robot was placed in an aisle seat, but the cabin crew were concerned:
- If turbulence occurs, the robot can slip
- Potentially blocking evacuation routes
Eventually, Bebop was moved to a window seat and secured better.
The biggest problem apparently came from the battery.
During a follow-up security check, it was discovered that:
- The lithium-ion battery in the robot has a very large capacity
- Not in accordance with aviation regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration
- Not included in the exception list
The risk is quite serious because it has the potential to cause a fire.

The airline immediately took action:
- The battery must be removed
- Temporarily confiscated at the location
The plane was only allowed to fly after this problem was resolved—which ultimately caused a 62-minute delay.
Interestingly, this incident did not trigger complaints from passengers.
On the contrary:
- Many took photos with Bebop
- The robot even “entertains” with its active movements at the airport
On social media, many passengers described this experience:
unique, fun, and an unforgettable moment
Some even argue that the presence of humanoid robots like this should be welcomed with an open attitude.***
