PEKALONGAN PORTAL – Hantavirus is a zoonotic virus carried by mice and can cause serious diseases such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).
Although there are reports of mutations that allow human-to-human transmission (especially the Andes virus in South America), its spread is not as massive as Covid-19.
In Indonesia, hantavirus cases have been reported, especially related to the Seoul virus, but are still rare.
What is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a group of viruses from the Hantaviridae family that is transmitted by mice and other rodents.
Causes two main syndromes:
HPS: lung disorder, can be fatal.
HFRS: kidney and blood vessel disorders.

Origin and History
First identified in 1978 near the Hantan River, South Korea.
A major outbreak occurred in the United States in 1993, giving rise to the term HPS.
Andes virus in South America is the only hantavirus proven to transmit between humans, but cases are limited.
Situation in Indonesia
Indonesia: reports of hantavirus cases already exist, especially regarding the Seoul virus.
Research shows that hantavirus is found in Java, Sulawesi and Denpasar.
However, distribution data is still limited and not widely known to the public.

Anticipation and Prevention
Avoid contact with mice: close the entrance to the house, store food safely.
Environmental cleanliness: clean areas with potential rat nests with disinfectant.
Use PPE when working in high risk areas.
See a doctor immediately if you experience symptoms of fever, shortness of breath, or kidney problems after contact with rats.***
