MALANGRAYA.CO – Julian Quinones and Raul Jiménez who scored Mexico’s winning goal over South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup should be the main highlight. However, what actually stole the public’s attention was a duck named Merlin.
Merlin, a two-year-old duck, suddenly went viral and was appointed as the first unofficial mascot of the 2026 World Cup tournament.
Wearing a mini jersey and socks typical of the Mexican national team, Merlin paraded amidst thousands of euphoric supporters in Mexico City.
Photos of his stylish appearance immediately spread widely and were viewed millions of times on various social media platforms. Overnight, as if struck by magic from the great name of the legendary wizard who inspired his name, Merlin managed to amaze the virtual world.
“We want to see Merlin at the stadium,” wrote one netizen.

“This duck has become a national treasure,” said another.
But for Mexico City residents, Merlin has long been a local celebrity.
Who is Merlin the Duck?
This familiar figure at various events and public markets in the historic city center usually accompanies the owner, Carla Gomez, who every weekend sells mineral water and soft drinks from a small cart.
Merlin’s presence always invites excited screams, warm greetings, and photo requests from passersby.

“We don’t like leaving him home alone; we want him to always be with us. He’s our baby,” Gomez said.
Rain or shine, Merlin always faithfully follows Gomez and his son, Cristian, around various famous landmarks in the capital, from Alameda Central, the Palace of Fine Arts, to Zocalo Square.
This duck has a special closeness to Cristian, who was originally a gift to him, and has now become an inseparable friend for the child.
“Merlin is actually quite well known through our drinking water business and we never thought he would become a sensation like this,” continued Gomez.
Now, the family hopes that Mexico’s proud feathered supporter can continue to bring good luck to its host country. Mexico is co-hosting with the US and Canada, having previously hosted in 1970 and 1986.***
