KABARMEGAPOLITAN.com – International Widows’ Day 23 June: defend the full rights and recognition of widows in their countries. These days, the plight of widows around the world is often ignored.
Around the world, women who lose their husbands to illness or war face a number of challenges, and not all of them have families to support them when they do.
International Widows Day aims to ensure that widows are given the support they need to get through an extremely difficult time, and ensure widows maintain full rights and recognition in their countries.

In many countries, the sudden widowhood of women also puts them in a situation where they are denied their right to inheritance money or rights to inherited land.
Some were subjected to life-threatening, degrading or painful mourning practices and burial rites when their husbands died.
Some will be taken from their homes or separated from their children, denied work and access to health care.
Unfortunately, in some countries, women’s rights are only tied to their husbands. When her husband dies, she may have no place in society.

It is not uncommon for women in this situation to be forced to marry another male relative of their husband.
There are also cultures that see widows as cursed or associated with witchcraft practices, which of course makes them separated from their community and often ostracized along with their children.
International Widows Day seeks to end this exclusion and better educate society about the needs of vulnerable women such as widows, and empower them to have access to health care and education for their children.
International Widows’ Day became a globally recognized day in 2010, established by the 65th UN General Assembly.***
