BUTOLPOST – Tensions in the Middle East have heated up again after the United States (US) launched air strikes on a number of areas in southern Iran early Wednesday morning.
Iranian media reported that explosions and projectile hits occurred at several strategic points in Hormozgan Province. The Tasnim news agency said the Sirik, Qeshm Island and Minab areas were the targets of attacks carried out by US fighter jets.
At least six explosions were heard in the target area. Iranian state television confirmed a projectile hit the town of Sirik, while several other projectiles reportedly fell on Qeshm Island.
Until now, Iranian authorities have not revealed in detail the extent of damage or possible victims as a result of the attack. However, the situation in the southern region of Iran is reported to be on high alert status.
In response, Iran’s air defense system was immediately activated in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm and Sirik to anticipate further attacks.
A separate report from the Mehr news agency said four explosions also rocked the Jask Harbor area. Apart from that, another explosion was reported to have occurred on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas City.
The attack marks the latest escalation in increasingly tense relations between Washington and Tehran. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the military operation was an act of “self-defense” against Iran.
According to CENTCOM, the attack was launched in response to the previous incident involving the crash of a US Army Apache helicopter. The American military considers this step necessary to protect their personnel and interests in the region.
This latest development has sparked international concern about the potential for widespread conflict in the Middle East. A number of observers assess that mutual attacks between the two countries risk increasing regional instability, which is already vulnerable to armed conflict.
